Welcome to the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop
This New Years Eve we take you on an immersive journey back in time to where it all began. The year is 1979 and DJs in the South Bronx are laying the foundations to Hip Hop culture. The infamous DJ Kool Herc is drawing crowds over on Sedgwick Avenue, Grandmaster Flash is cutting it up at his block parties at Fort Apache, and along the Bronx river the funky breaks from Afrika Bambaataa are blasting through the neighbourhood. B-boy crews are bringing a vibrancy to every street corner, park jam and block party across the city. The infamous Crazy Legs and his Rock Steady Crew battle it out with the New York City Breakers over at Club Negril. Meanwhile, another art form is being born in the borough and taking over the city. From the Bronx to Manhattan, from Queens to Brooklyn, Graffiti is the backdrop to Hip Hop. Originators Fab Five Freddy and Tracy 168 have created the iconic “Wildstyle” and the NYC Subway system spreads the culture across New York.
